BRYAN, Texas — The holiday season is a time of giving, but for the Brazos Church Pantry in downtown Bryan, it is a time of giving year-round.
The pantry serves the low income and homeless families of Brazos County, and the peak season for people visiting the pantry is now.
"The highest numbers come in November and December, and I think it's because a lot of families come to visit with Christmas and Thanksgiving. The holidays draws families, and so if you have more people in your home, you already don't have enough to eat. You definitely need more food," said Brazos County Church Pantry volunteer Andrea Derrig.
More people coming for more food can lead to shortages in supply.
"We do run into shortages at different times. We're guessing each week how much food we need to order, so we're pretty small as far as space goes to store food, and there's 1191 square feet in this building. That's not very much, so we have to be careful about what we order," said Derrig.
Not only applicable to food, the pantry also runs into a deficit of volunteers during the holiday season. it says the best way to help it continue to serve the community is through volunteers and monetary donations.
