Staying healthy while traveling this flu season

During the winter months when the flu and viruses are popular inhabitants of your body, simple standard precautions may protect you from getting sick this season.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Many minds are floating around the new Coronavirus that could potentially be setting itself into the United States, but another topic of importance is how you can travel safely and how airports are working to protect you from getting sick during your travels.

From entering the airport, going through security, taking off, to landing, you interact with so many people-- which is why airports, especially in times of virus outbreaks, begin heavily screening visitors.

"The screening they can do right now are mostly questions you know if you've been to those areas. You have these symptoms, it's like a checklist. If you don't have these symptoms, you're given a card, and then they go home," said CHI St. Joseph Pediatrician Maria Soriano.

Especially during the winter months when the flu and viruses are popular inhabitants of your body, simple standard precautions may protect you from getting sick this season.

"If you're sick, cough on your elbow, wash your hands for 20 seconds, use hand sanitizer, and then if you can stay at home. Don't go to school, don't go to work whenever you have the virus," said Dr. Soriano.

When passing through airport security, the screening will check for fever and other symptoms of illness.

"So they check the traveler's temperature and then they have a checklist. if you have a cold, cough, have difficulty breathing, things like that," said Dr. Soriano.

Local doctors warn it is still peak flu season, and it's necessary to take all the precautions you can to prevent falling ill.

The CDC has a list of instructions as to how you can protect yourself this season.
