BRENHAM, Texas — Come rain or come shine, the staff and faculty members in Brenham ISD are providing free meals to students and families while schools are closed.
"We started on Monday and we will extend this through the school closure which will hopefully end April 3," said Jessica Johnston, director of communication and community relations.
Brenham ISD is providing both breakfast and hot lunches, which the school district has seen hundreds of families come out to Alton Elementary School to grab.
"We fully realize that our families depend on the services that the school district provides to feed their families," said Johnston.
Starting Monday the school district will add two additional locations for families to pick up their meals: Brenham High School and Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church.
"If we're able to take that financial burden off of them so they can use those funds elsewhere, the more the better," said Johnston.
For those staff members who volunteer to help prepare and hand out food, they say this is another way they can be involved in students' lives.
"We do it at schools, so we feel like this is just an extension of ways we can help the students and their families during this difficult time," said Sue Anderson, a life skills teacher.
And with good social distancing practices, the meal service program allows Brenham ISD teachers to still check in on students.
"As long as they need us we're going to be there for them. We also hope they're reading books and doing they're math while they're at home. We're loving that."
The district is also working on a plan to meet the needs of students and families who are do not have transportation or live in remote areas.
