Bryan drive-in recycling center to close permanently

Folks in Bryan-College Station will have to find an alternative to go green after the Walmart location on Briarcrest closes down on Feb. 16, 2020.

BRYAN, Texas — The Bryan drive-in recycling center at 2202 Briarcrest drive will be permanently closing on Feb. 16, 2020 to allow for redevelopment of the Walmart shopping center.

In 2018, Walmart approached the City of Bryan about their redevelopment plans that wouldn’t leave room for the current recycling facility there.

“They were open to the idea of allowing the site to continue at different locations. The locations we were given it just didn’t quite work out the way they wanted to... there’s gonna be some dollars to have to be spent to get the site ready to be a recycle center,” said Eric Zaragoza with the Bryan Municipal Center.

So starting Feb. 17, 2020, Bryan-College Station locals will have to find an alternative to recycle.

“Since we’re not gonna have that option to drive through, there is options out there, and one of them is using a permanent waste hauler that recycles curbside,” Zaragoza said.

“We're gonna help the private companies see if they can grow their customer base. We wanted to take a step back and see what these private companies can do.Because right now we're looking at a five percent participation rate... when we look at how many people participate with the current vendors."

The city also wants locals to know that just because the option won’t be available in the near future, that “doesn’t mean we’re talking it off the table forever. If we see a need there and the city needs to step in, there could be an opportunity for us to revisit it and to bring it back," Zaragoza said.

No one will be losing their jobs due to the closure, according to the city, and as of now, they plan on putting more focus on their Do-it-yourself Oil Center that is available to recycle oils and tires.
