BRYAN, Texas — After a fast start to the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the tropics have become quite inactive over the past several days. A tropical wave, located north of Puerto Rico, may change this next week.
This tropical wave is forecast to move west-northwest into the central Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week. The waters in the Gulf of Mexico are very warm. Gulf water temperatures are in the mid-to-upper-80s. Water temperatures this warm will help support tropical development if other environmental factors align.
Numerical guidance (the weather models meteorologists use as a tool in forecasting) is indicating a low chance for this tropical wave to develop into a Tropical Cyclone (Depression or Storm) late next week as it approaches the northwestern Gulf states.
All residents from the Texas coast to Louisiana should keep an eye on local forecasts as the picture becomes clearer over the next few days. Regardless of development, this system will create an uptick in showers and storms for parts of Texas and Louisiana.
