KILLEEN, Texas — A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended with a crash that shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 14 near the Killeen Mall Wednesday afternoon, according to Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez.
Police reported at 7:43 p.m. that all lanes are open.
The situation started when Killeen Police officers were helping the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigate several stolen cars at the mall. That's when they spotted a stolen Kia sedan that quickly sped off toward Illinois Avenue, Miramontez said.
Officers tried to pull the driver over, but the suspect refused to stop, leading to a pursuit. The driver raced southbound on Illinois Avenue, going at a high speed, she said. The driver of the stolen vehicle hit a guardrail and veered onto the interstate and crashed into a Kia minivan.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, but the driver of the minivan was checked at the scene and released by EMS. Two other vehicles were also damaged by flying debris from the crash, though no serious injuries were reported.
