American Michael Phelps shared the silver in a three-way tie in the 100-meter butterfly, making more history at the Rio Olympics.
Phelps tied with Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh as Joseph Schooling of Singapore pulled off the upset and won gold.
Phelps touched second in 51.14 in the 100 fly, earning silver in the event he’d won each of the past three Olympics.
The only event left for Phelps to swim here is Saturday night’s medley relay.
Phelps is now up 28 Olympic medals overall, with 22 of them gold.
Though the 31-year-old Phelps is certainly in world-class shape, he has said he is going to retire after these Games. His longtime coach, Bob Bowman, thinks Phelps will stick to retirement this time around — and not return to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“I just don’t see it happening,” Bowman said Thursday night. “He’s in such a good place personally. He doesn’t need it.”
