Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman enters transfer portal alongside other players

While the announcement is an unfortunate loss for the Aggie quarterback room, it's not the most surprising news given his benching in the back half of the season.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — As the transfer portal window has opened following the end of the 2024 college football regular season, many players are entering the portal in hopes to find playing time elsewhere.

For Texas A&M, there have been a couple of high-profile names that have announced they will be entering the transfer portal, including former starting quarterback Conner Weigman.

"It has been an honor to run out onto Kyle Field in front of the 12th Man for the past three years," he said in a statement on Tuesday, Dec. 3. "The memories and relationships I have made throughout my time in Aggieland will last a lifetime. I am proud to say I was a 'Fighting Texas Aggie' And it has been a privilege to call a special place like this home."

While a disappointing announcement for some, it's understandable that Weigman would seek additional playing time in a starting role elsewhere instead of competing with rising star Marcel Reed for the starting job once again after losing it in the back half of the 2024 season.

He isn't the only offensive player to announce he would be going into the portal, as OL Aki Ogunbiyi, WR Cyrus Allen, TE Jaden Platt, and QB Jaylen Henderson all have announced they would be looking for another program to continue their athletic careers going forward. On defense, the only player that has entered the portal is DL Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, who has seen little playing time in his two years at A&M due to injury.

While there haven't been any portal signings, there are lots of positions that Mike Elko and his staff will look to fill with new talent going into next year. Arguably the position with the biggest needs talent-wise is wide receiver, which has had flashes of playmaking potential, but has ultimately not produced to the extent that some may have hoped for at the start of the year.

Looking forward, wide receiver is one position that the Aggies will definitely be looking to fill during the transfer portal window. While there are promising talents still currently on the roster in Terry Bussey, Micah Tease, as well as incoming freshmen in the 2025 class and other freshmen coming out of their redshirt year, having receivers with experience is invaluable, especially in a conference as competitive as the SEC.
