Rangers fans, are you sure you want Houston? The story behind the energizing chant

Rangers fans, remember when Yankees fans started the "We want Houston" chant? Well, they got swept. Phillies fans made the same mistake and suffered a similar fate.

HOUSTON — They say some people have to learn the hard way, and that may soon be the case for Texas Rangers fans.

Before the Houston Astros claimed their spot in the American League Champion Series, Rangers' fans were already chanting "We want Houston" after they swept the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Division Series.

"(Game 3 against the Orioles) was perfect. We got the bats swinging. We got the people we need to step up. We're doing great. We want Houston, baby," a Rangers fan told our sister station WFAA. "We want 'em. It doesn't matter. We're ready."

"Bring on the Astros and we'll sweep them, too," one fan told WFAA. "All the way to the World Series. This is our year. This is the Rangers' year."

Now, we just want to remind you Rangers' fans, that chant didn't age well for both the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies fans last year. Oh, and let's not forget to add the Minnesota Twins fans to that list.

Exhibit A

The New York Yankees secured a spot in the ALCS last year and got a chance to compete (although there wasn't much competition) against the Houston Astros.

Their fans were heard chanting, "We want Houston" before the start of the series and let's just say they got exactly what they were asking for.

The Astros swept the Yankees in the ALCS, leaving no crumbs on the floor. Sorry, not sorry.

Exhibit B

The Astros went on to the World Series and Phillies fans thought it would be clever to mimic the Yankees with the "We want Houston" chant.

Let's just say you play with fire and get burned.

The Astros not only won the series 3-2, but they won in Philadelphia's stadium, making the "We want Houston" chant that much sweeter for Astros fans.

Now Rangers fans, we suggest you follow the advice from people on X who are telling you to tread lightly because when you ask for Houston, you get Houston!

The Astros won their 7th-straight ALCS on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

The series is now a battle against the best in Texas.

The Astros and the Texas Rangers will start Game 1 of the ALCS on Sunday, Oct. 15.
