RICHARDS, Texas — A coach at Richards ISD in Grimes County suddenly passed away during a volleyball practice on Thursday, Aug. 8, according to the district.
First responders and staff attempted to save Coach John Carlisle's life, but he tragically passed away, according to the district.

"Dear Members of the Richards ISD Community,
It is with heavy hearts that Richards Independent School District announces the sudden passing of Coach John Carlisle. Coach Carlisle passed away during volleyball practice on Thursday, August 8, 2024. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by members of our staff, we tragically lost a new member of our community. Students were immediately escorted from the premises to ensure their well-being and to provide clear access for first responders.
The District has informed the appropriate authorities and is working closely with Coach Carlisle’s family to provide support and assistance as they navigate this tragic loss. In the coming days, the District will coordinate counseling and support services for our students, faculty, and staff to help our community cope with this devastating event.

On behalf of the entire District, we extend our deepest condolences to Coach Carlisle's family, friends, students, and players. He will be profoundly missed."
The Richards Panthers volleyball team is slated to have two scrimmages against Iola and Madisonville on Friday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10 at 8 a.m. respectively at both teams' schools.
