Merrill Green, the first-ever football coach at Bryan High School, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the age of 94.

BRYAN, Texas — Merrill Green, a significant figure in Bryan High School's football history, has died at the age of 94.

Green's death was confirmed Sunday evening.

"Prayers and comfort go out to the family of Coach Merrill Green," the Bryan High School football account said on X, formerly Twitter. "He had a huge impact in Bryan High and Bryan ISD, more importantly in the city of Bryan and the community. He also influenced many of others through [the Texas High School Coaches Association]."

Green joined the Vikings in the 1972 fall football season just one year after former head coach and athletic director Allen Davis headed the inaugural season, going 138-65-6 in his tenure with the Bryan Vikings.

The school's on-campus stadium where they and crosstown rival Rudder High School compete at, is named after him. It was changed in his honor from Viking Stadium in 2008.

Before he coached the Vikings, Green had stints at a number of programs at the college level, including Wichita State, the University of Missouri, the University of Arkansas, and Texas Tech University. He also played football for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1950 to 1953 and was even drafted in the 1954 NFL Draft by the then-Washington Redskins, currently known as the Commanders.

Green retired in 1992 and was later elected to the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor with an overall record of 197-82-9.
