ARGYLE, Texas — Argyle Liberty Christian capped off an undefeated season in dominating fashion on Friday, defeating Austin Regents 52-10 in the TAPPS Division II state championship game.
The win marks the school's first state title in 16 years. The Warriors also finished 14-0, marking the school's first ever undefeated season. The team was led by third year head coach and former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten. Liberty Christian made quick work of Austin Regents, jumping out to a 21-3 lead after quarterback Cole Welliver connected with wide receiver Brady Janusek on a 10-yard touchdown catch.
Janusek also scored on defense with a 50-yard interception return.
Austin Regents got its only touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass by freshman quarterback Jack Devine.
Witten had never been on a championship team in his football career – despite being one of the game's best all-time pass catchers. So, leading the Warriors to a title, which features his two sons, fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a champion.
“I have been dreaming for this moment since I was twelve years old, and I’m 41 now,” Witten told WFAA's partner's at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Can’t say enough about this team, the coaches, the fans. Just incredibly proud.”
