COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Although the city of College Station only experienced 98% totality on the day of the Great American Eclipse, there was still a large crowd of generations of residents looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Friends of Chamber Music provided a musical soundtrack at Century Square to the highly anticipated astronomical event.
College Station resident, Ozden Ochoa, who has been living here since 1976 said, “This is once-in-a-lifetime for me even though I’m a senior citizen, with or without clouds we were determined to be a part of this occasion.”
The younger generation was interested in seeing how nature changed.
“I’m going to look at the eclipse and my dad is going to film my dog getting crazy,” said Girl Scout, Eleanor Nation.
Some tied the event to phenomena that would most likely appear in a science fiction story.
A&M Graduate student Chris Mendez explained, “I think that the apocalypse is probably going to happen in the next 20 minutes or so, so I’m preparing for that as well.”
Others were interested in the facts.
“The last one I remember I was in India, it was in 2020 but that one isn’t as special as this one because, I read the facts, the last time this happened was in 1978 and its happening after so many years so it’s kind of a special one for me," said PhD Student, Digvijy Bared.
But most were just excited to experience this together.
Freshman student, Sarah Alcala described the nostalgic feeling of togetherness, “Most of them are students just like us or parents but it was fun because you get to watch all the kids. I remember when I was a kid back in my hometown in Mexico there was a red moon during the night and I was just with my family and I was a kid and this is once in a lifetime, they get to experience that now and we get to experience it too so it was fun."
