ANDERSON, TEXAS, SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 – USDA Rural Development announced funding today for the Grimes County Senior Citizens Center to make much needed improvements and repairs to the building.
“Senior Citizens Centers in rural Texas serve as a meeting point in the community and help an aging rural population maintain a sense of purpose and self-worth; as well as providing activities that foster community building, camaraderie, and positive life-styles for our elderly citizens,” said Texas Community Program Director Michael Canales. “Local non-profit organizations have increasingly tighter budgets each year, Community Facilities grants are strong tools for providing much needed improvements to rural facilities which otherwise may be unavailable to residents of rural areas.”
The Grimes County Senior Center, Inc. is the recipient of $24,500 in Community Facility Grants funded by USDA Rural Development. Funding will be used to make much needed improvements and repairs to the building, including replacing the front porch and removing the loose and damaged stucco on the exterior of the building. These changes will make the center cleaner, safer and more comfortable for the citizens of Grimes County to enjoy.
USDA Rural Development Community Programs enhance the quality of life for rural Texans by providing funds to governmental entities, nonprofit organizations and Indian Tribes for essential community facilities and services. Funds may be used for a variety of community projects. Previous funds have been used to enlarge, improve or construct schools, libraries, farmers markets, medical clinics, assisted living centers, public buildings, community centers or fund new and improved water and wastewater facilities. Funds are also available to purchase public safety equipment such as ambulances, firefighting equipment and other required emergency service gear.
