Caldwell groups aim to increase veteran resources in rural counties

Tony Zaccagnino says that groups like the VFW, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans are examples of places veterans can turn to in Burleson County.

CALDWELL, Texas — On Monday, the American Legion and VFW posts in Caldwell came together to hold a Memorial Day ceremony for the veterans who passed away in combat.

Burleson County has a rich history of veterans from the area who've served going all the way back to World War 1. A memorial is even on the footsteps of the county courthouse that displays a number of the names of those who've passed away.

The ceremony included a laying of the wreath, rifle valley, and taps in honor of those servicemembers.

Tony Zaccagnino, an Army veteran and the Vice Commander for the VFW Post 4458, said that it's always important to demonstrate respect to those who have served our country. Especially those who've passed away while in the line of combat.

“We’re happy for the recognition. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, spend 365 days to thank a veteran as far as I’m concerned," said Zaccagnino.

The Vice Commander added that his group and others are also resources that they hope more veterans in the area feel comfort in turning to when looking for assistance in the future.

“If we do have somebody who needs medical help or services or just doesn't know where to turn, they can come to one of our organizations or the office at the courthouse," said Zaccagnino.

The veteran said that the county has a Veterans Services Officer in place for those looking for assistance but are unsure of where to turn to.
