BRYAN, Texas -- A 2-year-old is in critical condition after allegedly being abused by a Bryan man.
Officers with the Bryan Police Department arrested Alexis Balleno, 22, Wednesday morning without incident.
According to a probable cause statement, Balleno, who had been watching the boy while his girlfriend was at work, told police the toddler started crying and he threw the baby up in the air "in an attempt to soothe him." While doing this, Balleno said he stumbled and the baby fell head first onto the couch, before landing on the floor where he kept crying.
Balleno then shook the toddler for about "10" seconds before the boy settled down, according to the statement. Balleno reportedly admitted to the toddler's head flopping back and forth during the shaking.
The toddler was flown to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston where he is listed in critical condition. A hospital representative said the boy has bleeding in the brain and an anoxic brain injury. The representative also told investigators they believe the boy's injuries are related to child abuse.
Balleno is charged with injury to a child. His bond has been set at $100,000.
