Former Texas A&M University System Chancellor named chair, elected to Texas Pharmaceutical Initiative Governing Board

Mike McKinney, M.D. served as the Texas A&M System Chancellor from late 2006 to mid 2011, and will now be taking on a new role for the state.

TEXAS, USA — Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed three individuals to the Texas Pharmaceutical Initiative Governing Board, one of which includes former Texas A&M University System Chancellor Mike McKinney, M.D.

The other individuals appointed include Golinda Erowele, Pharm.D. of Missouri City who has served in Missouri City as a healthcare executive for nearly two decades, and Tony Schell of Austin. Schell is a general partner at Escalate Capital Partners. 

McKinney served as Texas A&M University System Chancellor from November 2006 to June 2011. Current University System Chancellor John Sharp took over in September. He has over three decades of experience in the medical industry and even served as the commissioner for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission from 1995 to 1998. 

Mckinney is a member of the American Medical Association and a lifetime member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. McKinney received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Houston and a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

In his new position, McKinney will work with other board members to develop a business plan and provide cost-effective drugs and other medical supplies for the public employee sector. The public employee sector is comprised of public service and public enterprise jobs. Some examples include military, law enforcement, public transit, and public education along with those working in health care and government. 

Mckinney will serve as chair of the board for as long as the governor sees fit.
