PEARLAND, Texas — A 14-year-old boy is dead after leading police on a chase Wednesday night, according to the Pearland Police Department

It started around 10 p.m. on Highway 288 northbound after the teen's family told officers the kid took his mother's car. Pearland police said an officer saw the teen run a red light and stop sign and the officer started chasing him. During the short chase, the teenager lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier. The boy then got out of the car and ran across several lanes of traffic before officers lost sight of him on the southbound side of 288.

Minutes later, a driver called 911 to report hitting a boy running down that highway. Police identified him as a suspect in their chase.

The teen was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the teen hasn't been released because of his age.
