COLLEGE STATION, Texas — With shelter in place orders and social distancing, many local businesses have either closed or need our help.
The organization of locally owned independent restaurants called BCS Local Flavor teamed up with one local business owner to raise money to feed those fighting on the front lines of this pandemic.
“The donations have mostly come from online support, through social media, Facebook mainly, there’s a website that people can go to, bcslocalflavor.com, and there’s a Brazos Feed It Forward button, people can click to donate," said community founder of Brazos Feed It Forward Hugh Stearns.
So far they have raised more than $8,000 and are expecting that number to rise.
This fundraiser allows the community to show appreciation to the essential workers and also support local restaurants at the same time.
“They don’t have as much a financial backbone as the franchises do so it’s important for that reason. This also reflects the character of our community, we have visitors here, we have someplace to go that’s just not the same thing they can get in their own town," said Stearns.
The money donated goes to the Bubba Moore Foundation who then orders about 50 meals at a time to have them delivered to people at the front lines of the community fighting the virus.
“We expect it to keep going for quite a while we hope, we know that when the shelter in place order is lifted, that our restaurants….People aren’t going to be able to go out and eat so much, there’s going to be a lot of hungry people, so we see things transitioning from those who are on the front lines to those who are more in a financial sort of patch," said Stearns.
Participating restaurants receive a fixed amount of donations and are asked to put out their best and most filling food to the community.
