Summer camp engages kids in learning with animals

MADISONVILLE, Texas—Keeping kids engaged in furthering their education over the summer can be a challenge, but throw in some furry friends, and a few tortoises, and learning can be fun.

That’s the goal of the kids’ camp this week at Oak Creek Zoological Conservatory.

Owners Courtney and Michael Frenchak rescue exotic animals and give them a forever home at Oak Creek.

A dozen children attended the camp this week where they got a chance to feed and interact with some of the animals and reptiles, and learn fun facts about each species.

It’s a week of hands-on activities that takes learning far beyond the classroom.

“It's great to be able to educate the children. They're going to be the ones that are going to be saving, hopefully, the planet,” said Courtney Frenchak.

During the week-long camp, the children will learn everything about many species from sloths, to bears, to otters.

“We're trying to get them started young and have interest in animals, the environment, nature, and wildlife and everything that goes with it,” she added.
