COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The College Station Police Department has released a public safety advisory after receiving several reports that scammers have been calling and threatening multiple residents.

In a post on Facebook CSPD released a statement warning residents about scammers calling them from what looks like their number. Residents pick up the phone thinking CSPD is calling them only to have someone on the other line demanding money and threatening to hurt their family if they don't comply.

"We understand this is a very concerning issue, but we urge you to stay vigilant and never give access to personal information or send money to any suspicious number," CSPD said in their post.

Unfortunately, scams like these are becoming more and more common. If someone is threatening you and making you feel unsafe, immediately hang up the phone and report it to local law enforcement. Scammers like these rely on your confusion and fear.

If you are unsure if you are being scammed hang up the phone and call the number listed on the official website. It's important to always verify who you are talking to. Even though the call may look like it is coming from a number you recognize it's best to play it safe and double-check.
