New 'gateway monument' coming to College Station

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Visitors and residents will soon have a new landmark welcoming them to Aggieland.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Visitors and residents will soon have a new landmark welcoming them to Aggieland.

A new gateway monument, which will cost around $150,000, will be built along Highway 6 southbound at University Drive.

The monument will be about 10 feet tall and 40 feet wide. It will also be light up at night so drivers passing by can see it.

The city says the new sign is a symbol of pride.

"As they come into the city, the first thing we want them to see they're in College Station, home of Texas A&M because we're pretty proud of the university and what it brings to our city," said James Smith, a project manager with the City of College Station.

Ground is expected to break on the sign within the next two months and construction should take another two months.

Another sign will be built on the city's south side facing traffic heading north.
