NAVASOTA, Texas — After city officials revealed that a water well in Navasota tested positive for E. coli bacteria on Friday, the well is now back in service following a negative test for the bacteria.
Once the test for E. coli came back positive, the water well was immediately removed from use while the city coordinated with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to perform additional tests.
When the notice was initially put out, officials said that all distribution samples are in compliance and drinking water is safe to consume by the TCEQ, and that there is no need to boil prior to use.
E. coli bacteria can cause those that consume the water that it's in to become sick, and can be a concern for the following groups of people:
- Infants
- Young children
- Those with weakened immune systems
Some of the short-term symptoms that can affect those that do consume contaminated water include:
- Diarrhea
- Cramps
- Nausea
- Headaches
- and other symptoms
It's advised that those who encounter persisting symptoms to seek medical attention.
