Investigation being launched following error involving inmate release

According to the Brazos County Sheriff's Office, Terry Burns, 40, impersonated another inmate and managed to be released from jail shortly after midnight on Oct. 14.

BRYAN, Texas — An internal investigation is being launched by Brazos County authorities following an error involving an inmate on Oct. 14.

According to the Brazos County Sheriff's Office, 40-year-old Terry Burns of Killeen impersonated another inmate that was set to be released that day. Authorities say Burns shared the same last name as the inmate who was supposed to be released, was around the same age, and shared the same cell.

Authorities also say Burns signed multiple documents fraudulently, which was part of why his exact identity wasn't fully questioned by staff.

A search was launched afterwards to capture Burns by the Brazos County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies. He was spotted and captured around 4:41 p.m. near George Bush just south of Harvey Road without incident, according to authorities.

Burns is being charged with Escape and Fraudulent use or Possession of Identifying Information. According to jail records, his bonds total $128,000.
