NAVASOTA, Texas — A water well in Navasota tested positive for E. coli bacteria on Friday, according to city officials.
The water well that provided the positive E. coli test was immediately removed from use, and will continue to be shut down until tests for the bacteria come back negative.
City officials say that all distribution samples are in compliance and drinking water is safe to consume by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and that there is no need to boil prior to use. Chlorine is used to disinfect water from the wells before being distributed, city officials say.
The city says they expect to have the issue resolved within 10 days.
E. coli bacteria can cause those that consume the water that it's in to become sick, and can be a concern for the following groups of people:
- Infants
- Young children
- Those with weakened immune systems
