Construction for the Fun for All Playground has kicked off

Phase 1 of construction for the Fun for All Playground kicked off Monday afternoon at Central Park in College Station.

Phase 1 of construction for the Fun for All Playground kicked off Monday afternoon at Central Park in College Station.

Included in phase 1 of the playground's construction is 5 shaded play areas with rubber surfacing, splash pad, sidewalks, parking lots and fencing.

During the festivities, Patricia Gerling, President of the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley, made a special announcement for the future of the rest of the planned phases of construction.

A $500,000 matching grant from an anonymous private foundation in the Northwest Texas area will help fund phase 2 of the playground's construction. Fun for All Playground organizers are seeking community donations from local citizens, business and organizations to match this $500,000 grant.

Gary Blair, head coach of the women's basketball team at A&M University, was a speaker at the event and through Coach Blair Charities has helped fund the playground's construction.

"And I'm challenging all the businesses out there in Bryan/College Station, 5 thousand." Blair said. "Every business give to this. Your employees are going to benefit. You're going to feel good about it. I want it all done before Christmas time."

Phase 2 of the playground's construction will include the 'Carolyn and John David Crow Field' which is a one third scale football field, similar to Kyle Field right down to the restrooms and seating. The construction will also include an entry and donor plaza, fencing, lighting and additional play areas.

The construction of Phase 1 of the playground was allocated to Caprock Construction and is expected to be completed in approximately 6 months.
