DALLAS — After a deadly shooting in the Los Angeles-area following a Lunar New Year celebration, police departments in North Texas are responding to any concerns about potential violence at local events.
As of 3:20 p.m. p.m. Sunday, seven departments have released statements to WFAA.
Dallas Police Department (DPD)
The Dallas Police Department constantly monitors for and shares intelligence regarding any potential threats to events, groups or infrastructure in our city. At this time, there are no credible threats, but we will add additional patrols as needed as an added precaution.
DPD will always respond if there is a need for police presence or a call for service.
Arlington PD:
We are not aware of any threats to any of the Lunar New Year events taking place in Arlington this weekend.
We are certainly cognizant of the tragedy that occurred in Monterey – and we are always monitoring for potential threats against any of our residents / businesses. Our officers regularly patrol areas that are hosting events (such as Ben Thanh Plaza) and will continue to do so.
Grand Prairie PD:
Ensuring residents and visitors feel safe in Grand Prairie is our priority. Although we have no information connecting yesterday’s California tragedy to Lunar New Year events scheduled in Grand Prairie, we are increasing our footprint to ensure everyone feels safe while enjoying the holiday.
Frisco PD:
We are saddened by these tragic events. Rest assured that the safety of the community is our top priority. Although we are not aware of any events in our city, Frisco PD officers are reminded daily to stay vigilant and we also encourage the public to report any suspicious activity.
Garland PD:
We will continue to be vigilant as always and will adjust our personnel as needed.
Police in Fort Worth say there are no public Lunar New Year events happening Sunday. There was at least one event Saturday to celebrate the holiday and no incidents were reported.
Plano police also tell WFAA that there are no public Lunar New Year events happening in their area.
NOTE: This article will be updated if and when more statements are received from other police departments in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
What happened in California?
In Monterey Park, Calif., 10 people were reported dead after a gunman opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio shortly after Lunar New Events wrapped up in the area.
Authorities say another 10 people were injured in the shooting are reported to be in stable to critical condition as of Sunday morning.
Officials also say another ballroom in the nearby Alhambra area was also target about 30 minutes after the first shooting. In a press conference, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom where wrestled the gun away from him.
It's not clear if the two shootings were connected. The suspect(s) in both shootings have not been found.
