Bucking the odds: Inside professional bull riding

When you first get on there, its like a drug almost. It's something you can't let go, its hard to let go," said Mitchell.

BRYAN, Texas - It's the most dangerous organized sport in the world. A game of man vs. beast where the outcome could be the ultimate sacrifice.

Pro bull rider Ouncie Mitchell has been around rodeo his entire life, traveling from a young age to watch his dad compete as a professional bull rider.

"When you first get on, it's like a drug almost. It's something you can't let go of, its hard to let go," said Mitchell.

Every go a battle of life and death, but on the other end, courage discipline and respect.

Eight seconds is all they have, but time slows when you're on the back of an intense jerking and thrashing, bread to buck bull.

"You're going against that beef that's under you. That's the only thing you are going against," said Mitchell.

Just as with any professional sport, in bull riding the bang of the bull can be worth the buck. Millions in earnings and sponsorship on the line with each ride, but the reward can come at a life threatening cost for cowboys in this dangerous brotherhood of bull riding.

“I feel like my worst injury was when I got stepped on in the back of the head and got 12. I couldn't remember anything for a week straight,” said Mitchell.

Each ride like a high rollers game of Russian roulette, yet with all the risk bull riding remains one of the fasting growing sports.

So why risk it all bucking the odds of getting hurt?

“I always wanted to ride bulls. It’s my lifestyle it’s not something I just want to achieve one goal and quit, I want to keep going, it’s what I do for fun,” said Mitchell.
