BRYAN, Texas — Two Bryan police officers were hurt while trying to arrest a man who they said assaulted them and threatened to kill them and their families.
Daniel Zungia, 25, is charged with assault of a public servant, harassment of a public servant, two counts of obstruction and/or retaliation, damage to a patrol car and resisting arrest. He also had two warrants for his arrest for charges of public intoxication.
Officers were called to Austin's Colony Park on Thursday to check on a report of a suspicious car and person near the bathrooms. The officers found a man, later identified as Zungia, with a woman, later identified as 25-year-old Tierra Andrews of Bryan at the park. One of the officers arrested Zungia because a warrant for his arrest was confirmed, authorities said, and he was put in the back of a police car.
While talking with Andrews, the officers said Zungia tried to get out of his handcuffs. When the officers said they tried to put his hands behind his back, Zungia demanded they call his lawyer and began shouting at them that he knew who they were and he was going to kill their families.
During the struggle, the officers said Zungia grabbed one of their hands and twisted the fingers in an attempt to hurt them. They said Zungia then began banging his head against the car window and when one of the officers tried to stop him, they said Zungia spit in their eye and again threatened to kill them.
At this time, the officers said Andrews began shouting at them and at Zungia. They said she tried to pull one of the officers away from arresting Zungia and refused to follow directions to stand back and sit on the curb. They said when they tried to arrest Andrews for interfering, she began to resist by pulling away. They said she also refused to walk to the patrol car after being arrested.
Both of the officers said they had to go to the hospital to be checked out for injuries received during the arrest. One of the officers reported their patrol car was damaged by Zungia when he was resisting them.
Andrews is charged with resisting arrest, interference with a public servant and public intoxication. She has since bonded out of jail.
Zungia is currently in the Brazos County Jail on more than $106,000 bond. A check of his record in Brazos County shows a history of resisting arrest and harassment of public servant charges going back to January of 2019.
