BRYAN, Texas —
The students at Bryan High School have been working tirelessly to bring the Tony Award-winning musical ‘Hairspray’ to the Bryan-College Station community.
Every year the BHS Fine Arts Department works to put on a professional quality musical for the Brazos Valley, with the school’s choir, theater, band, dance, and art students all getting involved.
“Being an actor and performer in Bryan-College Station is a really cool spot for our students because there’s a lot of good theater happening in town,’ said Assistant Theater Director of BHS Bailey Robert.
‘Hairspray’ is a 1960’s style musical about a plump teen who loves to dance. She auditions for a local TV dance show and gets a spot, and with her arrival to the show comes the new idea that everyone should be allowed to dance on the show, no matter their body size or color of their skin.
“It’s a fun, flashy show, but it also has a lot of depth and feeling, and a message that is good for kids young and old. For adult hards to know, and to remember how to accept people and how to stand up for what they think is right. And it’s fun, it’s a good time. The kids are super talented, they’ve worked really hard, and it’s a great show to see, you don’t want to miss it,” said Robert.
The musical will be showing at the Bryan ISD Performing Arts Center on January 16th, 17th, and 18th at 7 p.m. with an additional matinee performance January 18th at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. BISD employees receive free admission.
