Brazos County settles with individual sexually and physically assaulted at county jail in October 2022

It's been over half a year since the suit was originally filed against Brazos County.

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas — Editor's Note: The attached video aired in April.

On Friday, a final judgment was delivered between Brazos County and a man that was physically and sexually assaulted while in the Brazos County Detention Center on Oct. 8, 2022 was reached for a suit that was filed in April.

The man, who was a minor at the time, was being held in custody on misdemeanor charges. While he was in custody, he was physically and sexually assaulted by three other minors over the course of five hours in what was described as horrific assault, according to court documents.

Additionally, no jailers monitored the area in-person to see if there was anything that needed their attention or responded to the man's calls for help over the intercom, a system that was meant to allow inmates to relay if they were possibly in danger so that a staff member could respond.

Brazos County later admitted that a system to check on those in the jail was turned off during the time the assaults took place. Court documents also show that an inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) in late June and into July found many glaring issues that were noted and should have been resolved, one of which included the intercoms not working properly, which was one of many measures that could have prevented the assault.

According to court documents, the half-million dollar settlement that was offered by Brazos County was accepted in writing on Nov. 17.
