Three legal cases in Texas 10th Court of Appeals to be heard at Blinn College Bryan Campus

The cases will be heard starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in Room F-120 in the Student Center.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Blinn College Bryan Campus will be hosting oral arguments three major court cases in the student center for the public to attend from the Texas 10th Court of Appeals out of Waco. This will be the 10th year that justices from the 10th Court of Appeals will have made their way to Blinn for such an occasion.

Those who wish to attend are welcome to attend any of the three individual arguments, or the entire session.

The cases will be heard in Room F-120, and will include:

  • Coryell County v. H&S Perryman Ranch, LLC
  • The State of Texas v. Saul Lee Suarez
  • Corsicana Industrial Foundation, Gander Mountain Company, and JP Morgan Chase Bank, N.A. v. City of Corsicana and Navarro County

Coryell County v. H&S Perryman Ranch, LLC deals with a jurisdiction and property dispute over driveways that were created as a part of a real estate development project. That case will start at 10 a.m.

After that case has concluded, the second case--which involves a murder and aggravated robbery indictment argument--will be heard. The case stems from a 2017 incident where a drug deal that went wrong resulted in the murder of 19-year-old Johnathan Munoz and later arrest of Saul Lee Suarez, who was 18 at the time. The defendant will argue that the search of his bedroom without his permission was a violation of his Fourth-Amendment rights.

The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution protects Americans from "unreasonable searches and seizures."

The final case that will be heard that day involves multiple big names that everyday consumers will likely have heard of at some point at 1:30 p.m. The case deals with a sales tax that was being used to repay a loan, which in turn was being used to develop a retail center. It will be debated if payments should continue once Gander Mountain--the shopping center's anchor store--should continue once the store had permanently closed.

All cases are projected to take 50 minutes.

The court proceedings will be livestreamed on YouTube, but those in attendance are not allowed to record video, audio, or take photographs while the court is in session. A link to the YouTube channel can be found here.

At noon, a Q&A session will be held with the judges.

"I'm excited to celebrate the court's milestone of hearing oral arguments at Blinn for the 10th year," Chief Justice Tom Gray said on Blinn.edu. "This is always such a wonderful educational experience for Blinn students and unique opportunity for us to engage with the public by taking the law out of the courtroom and to the community."

Following the conclusion of the oral arguments, the justices will head back to Waco to research the legal issues and precedents, and then issue a written opinion afterwards.
