BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas — The Brazos County Health District is hosting their second free health insurance enrollment event on Thursday, Nov. 2.
Samantha Chamberlain, insurance broker and one of the event's leaders, explained their first year's success, “We have actually covered over 150 people in the greater Brazos County area including Grimes County and several surrounding counties. I think the number is about 97% of them got full coverage at $0 per month.”
Everyone is welcome to find out more on how to get the insurance they need to live healthy lives.
Felicia Benford, Health Equity Coordinator at the Brazos County Health Department described their experience, “We see a variety. We do have some African Americans. We have Hispanics, we have Caucasians. It just depends. There's a lot of reasons why people don't have insurance. Some people have their children insurance, but not themselves, because it's so expensive.”
This group’s work has helped ease the minds of those worried about their future treatment.
“Just this last week, I helped a gal who lost insurance in June because she changed jobs and unfortunately, this last summer got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We were able to get her on a plan with a super low deductible. I mean, literally tears like crying when she's like, I'm going to be taking care of”, Chamberlain said.
One resident knows the impact health insurance can make in a family’s life.
Tina Workmon, a Brazos County Resident and caregiver, explained, “My father had emphysema and he had to have oxygen, so having that health insurance really helped pay for all that. Also, my mother with her health, it also helps pay for a lot.”
On Thursday, the health district will be open for everyone, no appointment needed.
Chamberlain expressed, “We’re going to stay open until as long as the last person is here for 7:30 p.m. or even later.”
