Local mask making group looking for donations and people's talents

Hero Mask Makers are asking for material donations and volunteers to make face masks for community.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The increase in demand for face masks is growing everywhere. Hero Mask Maker is hoping to help health care workers and others in the community by collecting materials to make more masks.

"It's really growing fast and furious and we're so happy for everybody's responses and contributions," said Rhonda Raphael, an organizer for Hero Mask Makers.

The group collects materials from the public to make face masks. They are looking for items like fabric, elastic, binding, twill tape and wire ribbon.

Hero Mask Maker is not only asking for material donations, they're also looking for people to donate their time and talents.

"We have over 60 seamstresses now helping with the cause," Raphael. "I think that we're on our way helping meet the coalition within our community."

Girl Scout troop 1908 member Nyla Adams donated 45 homemade masks Wednesday.

She got involved in mask making when family members in California sent her do-it-yourself masks.

"I got the idea that we can make some and we saw the ad for Hero Mask Makers and we just made some masks," said Nyla Adams.

Nyla started out cutting the fabric while her mother sewed the masks. But then she wanted to do more.

"I was like, 'OK. Let me show you how to use the sewing machine,'" said Mecca Adams, Nyla's mother. "By yesterday she was doing all of the sewing and I was cutting the fabric. Its been an amazing journey, she was really determined. I am really proud of her."

Nyla is hoping to make and donate even more to earn her bronze award for Girl Scouts. She said it is just a plus to being able to help out her community in need.

"I like helping out," said Nyla Adams. "It is fun and it keeps me busy."

Hero Mask Makers collect items on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to noon at Innovative Fitness on Texas Ave. They also are accepting donations at Peace Lutheran Church on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 pm to 3 pm.
