BRYAN, Texas — Public and private school campuses are closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year which is putting a damper in many student's senior years. Brazos Christian School in Bryan is trying its best to make those students last year a special one.
“This is certainly not what they expected their senior year to look like," said Wendee Binford, the principal for grade 7-12.
Brazos Christian School students were invited back to campus Thursday to drive-thru and pick up graduation items, like caps and gowns, and Class of 2020 signs for their front yards. They were also greeted with loud cheers and excitement from teachers and staff.
“I miss them so much and I wish them all the best," said Catherine Lee, an English teacher at Brazos Christian School.
Teachers, like Lee, said although this does not replace what experiences they’ve lost, this celebration is something they can do to honor them.
“Graduation is huge," Lee said. "It’s one of those life milestones and with so much uncertainty we wanted to find ways to celebrate them.”
The students said it has been a strange time.
“Once that it was decided it would be the rest of the year that is when everyone started to get really sentimental and were like, ‘Wait a second, we’re not going to be able to finish,'" said Chloe Perkins, a senior student.
The seniors are thankful they have a supporting school to do special activities like this.
“The fact that they just put this all together really shows how much they care about us," Perkins said.
Plus being able to see some of their friends' faces, from an appropriate social distance, was pretty sweet too.
“Seeing them brings back all of the memories of high school, all of the good memories," Perkins said.
