COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Editor's Note: The attached video aired in November 2023.
When it was put on the ballots last year, multiple propositions that would provide funding to College Station ISD athletic facilities failed to pass, despite other propositions aimed to provide security and technology upgrades to the district's campuses passing.
On Wednesday, the College Station ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to host a bond election on May 4 to give the athletics upgrades another chance to be approved by voters. The $53,470,000 bond package being proposed consists of upgrades and renovations to facilities at both A&M Consolidated and College Station High School.
Some of the areas that could see improvements, according to the district, include:
- A&M Consolidated High School fieldhouse
- expanding and renovating the weight room
- relocating coaches' offices
- a new and enlarged sports medicine area
- additions and renovations of the locker rooms
- two new classrooms
- upgrades to the interior finish, including paint and flooring
- site improvements due to the expansion for access between the weight room and baseball field
- A&M Consolidated High School athletic stadium
- expanding seating capacity to 6,300 from 5,238
- resurfacing the track
- adding turf to one of the "D-zones"
- rebuilding the press box, restrooms and concessions stands as one structure
- renovating the home and visitor entrances
- rebuilding the home and visitor ticket booths
- adding a new scoreboard
- College Station High School athletic stadium
- expanding seating capacity to 6,300 from 4,573
- resurfacing the track
- adding turf to one of the "D-zones"
- adding restrooms
- repairing the press box
- repairing concrete due to excessive heaving
- adding a new scoreboard
- converting the grass playing surface to artificial turf
- installing LED lights
- A&M Consolidated and College Station High School baseball & softball stadiums
- expanding seating (specifically for the A&M Consolidated softball stadium)
- renovating the press box and ticket booth (specifically for the A&M Consolidated softball stadium)
- modifying sidewalks and parking to accommodate improvements (specifically for the A&M Consolidated softball stadium)
The renovations for the first three items total $40,200,000, while the baseball and softball-specific propositions would total $13,270,000, according to the district.
According to Hilltop Securities, the CSISD financial advisor, the full $53,470,000 amount could be funded within the two cent increase voted on in November 2023. It is also forecasted that the propositions, if passed, will not result in a tax rate increase.
