COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M's Invent for the Planet is giving a new generation of engineers an opportunity to solve real world problems this weekend.
Engineering teams from all across the globe are tasked with creating efficient and innovative designs to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the world right now. The event will bring together 350 students from 38 universities across the globe for this event.
“Its training the next generation of student sot think about innovation to come up with better ideas new novel ideas to take on challenges not only regionally nationally but also globally,” said Mentor for Invent for the Planet, Chris Finberg.
Teams will provide solutions for needs statements ranging from bridging the agricultural water crisis to developing sustainable clean water solutions.
Freshman, General Engineering student, Gregory Blackfoot, described his idea, “I was looking at the need statements and one of them was about overfishing and over consumption of wildlife and I watch his show about the Texas game wardens and they’re always cutting gill nets that are always taking too many fish--I wanna do that need statement. Gill nets are illegal in the United States but they’re not illegal in Mexico so on the border there’s always gillnets overfishing taking resources from Texas.”
These students are ready to work as a team to change the world.
“One idea I’ve been thinking about it’s the microplastics in the lining of the cups so when you pour hot water into the cup it breaks down into thousands of little microplastics so I wanna collaborate with a group and find a solution to this problem,” described freshman engineering student, Axel Aguilar.
