Two arrested on multiple charges after theft of 'mini excavator' in Freestone County

The Sheriff's Office said two people were arrested in an incident described as "a scene from Tom and Jerry".

FREESTONE COUNTY, Texas — Two people were arrested on multiple charges in Freestone County following the theft of a "mini excavator", according to the Freestone County Sheriff's Office (FCSO).

The Sheriff's Office said dispatch received a call on Sept. 1 that a mini excavator had been stolen out of Spring, Texas.

The GPS tracking device on the excavator reportedly showed that it was in Freestone County in the area of CR 481, and a deputy was able to find it in a wooded area, according to FCSO.

However, the incident did not end there, the Sheriff's Office said. While waiting for a wrecker to pick up the excavator, the alleged thieves reportedly returned to the scene while the deputy was still there, leading to what the Sheriff's Office described as "a scene from Tom and Jerry".

While trying to get away from deputies, the suspects tried to "unload" drugs by throwing them out the window, said the Sheriff's Office, before willingly pulling over.

Deputies were reportedly able to recover some of the drugs, and, after an investigation, the two suspects were arrested and charged with theft of property, engaging in organized criminal activity, tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance PG less than 28 grams.
