BRYAN, Texas — A Bryan man will spend the next 22 years in prison for two crimes he committed in 2022.
According to the Brazos County District Attorney's Office, Ricky Hernandez was arrested after fleeing a stabbing that took place at a bar in College Station on Feb. 19, 2022. Hernandez fled the scene after the stabbing, but was discovered to have been connected to the incident after College Station Police Department detectives interviewed those at the crime scene and got cell phone video from bystanders. The video showed that the incident began as a verbal argument inside the bar but later spilled outside, when the fight turned physical.
Roughly two months later, on April 3, while Hernandez was out on bond for the stabbing incident, Bryan Police responded to a call one day regarding his daughter, who reported that she had been attacked by him. When the incident occurred, Hernandez was drunk and had angrily punched his daughter in the face when she refused to give him a hug and threw her across the room.
Hernandez was sentenced on Friday, Aug. 23 and was handed 10-year and 12-year sentences for Injury to a Child and two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon respectively. The former charge is the maximum sentence for the crime, while the maximum sentence for Aggravated Assault is 20 years.
"The Defendant repeatedly chose to respond with violence towards individuals who were no threat to him," said Assistant District Attorneys Jessia Escue and Gretchen Helmuth in a press release. "This punishment sends a message that this behavior will not be tolerated in Brazos County."
