One dead following early morning fight in Navasota, police say

Police say those at the scene told them a man forced his way into an apartment unit, assaulted a resident inside, and was then "forcefully removed" by others inside.

NAVASOTA, Texas — One man is dead after an early morning altercation at an apartment complex in Navasota, police say.

Around 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, police were called to investigate a fight at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Doris Street. When they arrived, officers found a large crowd gathered, and were told by many bystanders that a man had forced his way into an apartment without the consent of the residents and assaulted someone inside.

The other residents that were in the unit at the time "forcefully removed" the man from the apartment, which later turned into a fight between the man and the other residents. Police say the man that was removed from the apartment left the scene before officers arrived.

The man was located by a family member a short time later about two blocks away from the apartment complex where police were called to in a grassy field. Navasota PD officers say they observed him "unable to stand on his own and mumbling." He was eventually detained after resisting arrest, and medics were called to evaluate his personal status.

Police say the man lost consciousness while detained, which led officers to begin CPR. EMS and the Navasota Fire Department arrived at the scene to help administer treatment before the man was taken to St. Joseph Grimes Hospital by ambulance.

The man was pronounced dead around 2:30 a.m., police say. Authorities also say they are withholding the man's identity until next of kin is notified.

Investigators with the Navasota Police Department and a Texas Ranger are assisting with an investigation into the case. Authorities ask those with details of the incident to contact the Navasota Police Criminal Investigations Division or Grimes County Crimestoppers. The former can be reached by calling 936-825-6125 or 936-873-2000 respectively.
