Multiple truck thefts attempted in Navasota on Sunday

In the three reported attempts to stop the thieves, one Grimes County man was arrested for driving a stolen truck from Harris County.

NAVASOTA, Texas — On Sunday, thieves attempted to break in and steal multiple trucks in Navasota, according to officials.

Around 8 p.m., Navasota Police Officers went to investigate an attempted car theft in the 600 block of White Street, as it was reported that a man had broken into a Dodge 2500 truck and attempted to steal it, but was unsuccessful and fled. Police discovered that the steering column in the truck had been damaged upon further investigation.

Roughly two hours later, around 10 p.m., another call was made to police in the 1800 block of Birdie Court for another attempted car theft on a Dodge 2500 truck. When police made their way to where the crime was reported, they found the car running but without any passengers inside on the sidewalk in the 7700 block of Bunker Street.

Those in the area reported seeing a person running on foot towards Highway 105. Officers tried to find the suspicious person, but no arrests were reported from that incident.

Around the same time, another Navasota PD officer investigated a truck behind a property in the 9900 block of State Highway 6, and found a 37-year-old man driving a Ford F-450 with a trailer to transport cars that had been stolen from Harris County. 

JR Copeland, of Grimes County, was taken into custody and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Theft between $2500 and $30,000, and having a fake license plate on the trailer that was attached to the stolen Ford truck.

Investigators with the Navasota Police Department are investigating the attempted thefts and are asking anyone with information or video footage related to the events that evening to contact the Navasota Police Criminal Investigations Division at 936-825-6410 or Grimes County Crime Stoppers at 936-873-2000.
