GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — A 23-year-old man was sentenced on Monday to a total of 14 years in prison for crimes he committed in 2022 and 2023, according to the Grimes County District Attorney's Office.

In April 2022, Michael Laderrick Oaks was involved in an investigation launched by the Navasota Police Department in regards to a claim that he had sex with a 15-year-old female student at an apartment after a party. The victim told police that Oaks knew of her age, but still chose to do what he did. Oaks confessed to the sexual assault in an interview with District Attorney Chief Investigator John Wren in March 2023, and was indicted the same month.

While on bond later that year, in September, Oaks struck his pregnant girlfriend in the face during an argument, adding to his criminal history. He pled guilty to the two charges of Sexual Assault of a Child and Assault of a Pregnant Person on March 18, 2024. The former charge came with a 10-year prison sentence, while the latter charge came with a four-year prison sentence.

Prior to the sentencing, Oaks had no previous felony convictions. He is currently awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the Grimes County Jail, and will be required to register as a sex offender in the state for the rest of his life once he is released from prison.

"There is no acceptable reason for the type of conduct Michael Oaks has engaged in with both of these cases," said District Attorney Andria Bender. " The Grimes County Community does not tolerate this type of behavior and neither does our office."
