BRYAN, Texas — Just over one year after being arrested and charged for assaulting a police officer, drug charges, and more, a man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his actions by a Brazos County Judge following a guilty plea.

On Dec. 12, 2022, Jose Ramirez was pulled over by a Bryan Police officer for failing to stop at a stop sign. Once he stopped, he tried to get away from the car while admitting he didn't have a driver's license or proof of insurance. Ramirez later tried to run away, which caused a scuffle between the officer and him.

During the scuffle, Ramirez twisted one of the officer's fingers and broke it, which required the officer to get surgery and physical therapy. He was eventually taken into custody by other law enforcement members.

Ramirez has previously been convicted on familial assault charges, drug charges, and burglary of a habitation, according to the Brazos County District Attorney's Office.

"Officers put their safety on the line while serving our community--they deserve protection and those who choose to injure officers will be prosecuted and punished," said Assistant District Attorneys David Kaldas and Anjelica Harris.
