GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — A man that was arrested after a fight in Navasota has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
According to the Grimes County District Attorney's Office, on Nov. 30, 2023, officers were called out to a Stripes convenience store in town to break up a fight. When the officers arrived, they were told that Jimmie Peavy Jr., the man sentenced, and another individual had been fighting in the parking lot.
Peavy, who was drunk during the incident, got aggressive towards one of the officers that was at the scene. Another responding officer assisted and took him into custody for public intoxication.
However, while he was being placed under arrest, Peavy threatened, kicked, and spat on the officer, adding Retaliation, Harassment of a Public Servant, and Assault on a Public Servant to the things he would be charged for.
On Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, a jury heard a case against Peavy as well as a motion to remove certain parts of the charges being brought against him, but the motion was ultimately denied.
Peavy pled guilty to a third-degree felony charge of Harassment of a Public Servant and ultimately received his 35-year prison sentence in a plea agreement with District Attorney Andria Bender that included a range that took into account his previous felony convictions.
"Jimmie Peavy Jr. has a history of threatening and assaulting police officers. His behavior toward Sgt. Moon was unprovoked and disgusting to watch," said District Attorney Andria Bender in a press release. "Violence toward law enforcement is not tolerated in Grimes County. I am glad our local police officers will not have to waste further resources on this defendant for a while."
