SPRING VALLEY VILLAGE, Texas — An escaped inmate from Mississippi appeared in a Houston courtroom Friday morning and agreed not to fight extradition back to Hinds County.
Mississippi authorities could be in Houston as early as Monday morning to pick up Jerry Raynes and take him back to jail.
Raynes was taken into custody at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights on Thursday after someone there recognized him from news reports.
“Really grateful for the community and for the media on this one," Deputy U.S. Marshal Cameron Welch said.
Raynes and three other inmates escaped from the Raymond Detention Center last Saturday. One of them, Dylan Arrington, was killed in Conway, Mississippi Wednesday after shooting a deputy and killing a pastor while on the run.
The manhunt continues for Casey Grayson and Corey Harrison. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones believes they are likely still in Mississippi.
“We just ask that they peacefully surrender and return themselves to justice," Tyree said Friday. "We’re not going to stop looking for them, but we do not want anyone else to get hurt, injured, or possibly a loss of life while we are actively searching for these individuals.”
A truck stolen during the escape was found at a service station off I-10 in Spring Valley Sunday morning. Spring Valley police later released video of Raynes inside the Shell station and said he asked the clerk where the nearest hospital was.
Officials said it's unclear how or when he got to the hospital near the Heights or if he checked himself in. Raynes had no apparent injuries and it's unclear why he sought medical attention.
Jones said it's unclear whether Raynes came to Texas alone or with any of the other inmates that escaped the Raymond Detention Center in Hinds County, Mississippi.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Raynes was booked into the county jail after being questioned by federal authorities.
Jones said the U.S. Marshals, Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies and the Spring Valley Police Department assisted in capturing Raynes.
“With the relentless efforts of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force and their partners one escapee from Mississippi was arrested,” T. Michael O’Connor, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Texas, said in a news release. “Additionally, we would like to recognize the Houston media who covered the story. Due to their coverage, we received a credible tip as to the location of the escapee."
The four were being held on auto theft, burglary and stolen property charges.
