Man convicted of attempted robbery of Bryan post office

The U.S. Attorney's Office said the 26-year-old demanded all of the mail while pretending a pack of cigarettes was a gun.

BRYAN, Texas — A man from Bryan has been sentenced after being convicted of assault and attempting to rob a post office, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani, the jury deliberated for two hours before convicting 26-year-old Adon Bryce Clary of attempted robbery of a post office with a dangerous weapon, assault of a public official with a dangerous weapon and assault of public officials with intent to commit a felony.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Clary entered the post office located at 2121 Wm. Bryan Parkway in Bryan on April 29, 2019. Clary reportedly proceeded to "bang a Game of Thrones beer bottle while pointing an apparent firearm at the clerks".

Clary demanded all of the mail while claiming to have a gun, stated the Attorney's Office, however, the gun actually turned out to be an empty pack of green Pall Mall menthol cigarettes.

Five postal workers, three post office customers, three Bryan police officers and two postal inspectors reportedly testified at the trial. The postal workers and civilians all said they feared for their lives, according to the Attorney's Office.

Clary was reportedly ordered to serve 84 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge George Hanks. While handing down the sentence, Hanks noted Clary "could not be trusted to not put others in harm’s way if released", said the Attorney's Office.

Clary will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future, according to the Attorney's Office.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service reportedly conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Anthony Porto and Adam Laurence Goldman prosecuted the case.
