COLLEGE STATION, Texas — At Texas A&M University's MSC, MLK Breakfast, they welcomed keynote speaker, Dr. Angela Y. Davis, the American Political activist, author, and professor.
Over breakfast, Dr. Davis discussed topics like feminism, racism, and class issues as well as the controversy within universities all over the country who have decided to get rid of their DEI programs and have limited race and gender discussions in classes.
“At that time, it would’ve been absolutely impossible to imagine an academic world with Black Africana studies, Latino studies Asian American studies, and here we are today living that legacy, but fighting the same battle all over again,” Dr. Davis said.
Many students were able to take away key points from her insight.
First-year A&M student, Paul Mulenga said, “She also discussed there being a ceiling, and how some people are able to walk past the ceiling and make it. Just because a few people make it in an oppressed class, does not guarantee that the oppressed class will be able to rise up. So her discussion of building the foundation for everyone to allow more people to rise through it was incredible, it was powerful.”
This event left an impact on those looking to make their own mark in society.
“As someone who has studied her works, I got a signature too now, it’s just so inspiring to come and see someone who has had such an impactful and resonating standing in these movements,” said Senior, Eric Martinez, who is involved in on-campus activist groups himself.
