OnRamp asking for community help for Rudder High School's Coach Hill

More than a year after his dangerous accident, OnRamp is looking to help provide Coach Hill with another wheelchair accessible van after their previous van broke.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A year after Rudder High School Coach Calvin Hill received a van from OnRamp after he lost both of his legs in a fiery bus accident in 2022, the nonprofit is asking for the community’s help after an unexpected challenge.

“We donated a wheelchair accessible van to them and unfortunately the mechanism that allows the ramp to come down has broken and the company that designed it has gone out of business so there’s no way to fix that van and we need to get him a new van that has that ability to get the wheelchair inside,” explained OnRamp Founder, Blake Jennings.

The van breaking down has brought frustration to Hill and his recovery process.

“For Coach Hill and his wife Sabrina, it's not about the vehicle it’s about the freedom it provides, so they’re only able to get anywhere if a ramp accessible van is provided, so without a vehicle like this they’re confined to the home. They can’t get to the store. They can’t get to church. He can’t see his friends or see the kids up at Rudder,” Jennings said.

The non-profit is hoping to get this family back in their routine with help from the community.

“Our goal is to raise $15,000 towards this van and we’ve raised $5,000 so far and we hope to raise the reminder by this time next week,” Jennings said.
