Local non-profit showcases their free resources for residents during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Twin City Mission hopes to bring awareness to their free programs and hotline to assist those experiencing domestic violence in the Brazos Valley

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas — Although it may not seem like a common issue in the community, Twin City Mission wants to shed light on a serious topic during this Domestic Violence Awareness Month and bring attention to the resources available.

“At Twin City Mission, we define domestic violence as a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship. As you can tell, I didn't use the word violence in the description, so that opens up the doors to what a healthy relationship isn't,” described Kinsley Clark, Twin City Mission's Domestic Violence Prevention and Outreach Coordinator.

Twin City provides a wide range of services to address different cases.

“Six different types of domestic violence that we typically touch on are obviously; physical, sexual, emotional, digital, financial, and stalking, so that really opens the door to the many different ways that someone might realize they're not in a healthy relationship,” said Clark.

Victims will be given the advice they need to escape their situation, no matter how difficult it may seem.

Programs Coordinator, Laura Hart, explained, “So what it might look like for one client coming in, like we said it looks different for every client, so if you come in maybe you have children and you need help understanding legal documents we can refer you to our partners who help with legal aid.”

There are also ways you can help those in need.

“If you’re a friend even recognizing that someone's in that situation you can advise them to get their affairs in order that way. Never tell them what to do, because it does look different for people, you wanna make sure you listen and ask what help looks like for them,” clarified Clark.
