COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Located in south College Station, Hyperbole Bookstore has opened its doors after only a year of planning and construction.
After many years of outside adventures in the world of writing, Kathy Miller, a former Texas A&M professor, and her daughter, Kalena, decided the city was missing something only they could provide.
“A dozen years later, we’re living in Minnesota and decide we wanna open a bookstore, and we remembered that College Station doesn’t have an independent bookstore, so we kinda bemoaned that fact so here we are,” Kathy said.
This mother-daughter duo aims to create an environment for residents to express their love of literature.
“We’re big readers, we’re writers as well, and Kalena has written young adult books and I've written textbooks as a professor and some nonfiction, and so to be able to be in this part of the book world where we can connect with readers and make recommendations and hear what they’re reading it really expands our horizon as well,” explained Kathy when describing his and her daughter's passion for the industry.
Being an independent bookstore means catering to their customers despite the potential for backlash which many other bookstores and libraries have faced for having banned books on their shelves.
“We are not into book banning," Kathy explained. "We are into everyone having a choice in what they read, and when people have a choice then they can make selections that fit into their own desires, but we want to be very available with all kinds of books for all types of readers.”
If you'd like to visit Hyperbole Bookstore, they can be found at 1275 Arrington Road in College Station.
